Why are networks - which are at the heart of large technology companies like Google, Facebook and Twitter - also indispensable to institutions and individuals? Are there structural differences between computer networks and social networks?

Prof. Tobias Friedrich will present and examine different real-world networks and derive a set of features that these networks have in common. Scale-free models of large networks have enabled the development of new algorithms, e.g. for information dissemination, deanonymization and data visualization.

  • Prof. Dr. Tobias Friedrich
    Chair for Algorithm Engineering headed by Prof. Dr. Tobias Friedrich focuses on theoretical computer science and algorithm engineering. They are equally interested in the mathematical foundations of algorithms and developing efficient algorithms in practice. A special focus is on random structures and methods.
  • Dr. Joann Halpern
    Director of the Hasso Plattner Institute for Digital Engineering in New York (HPI) and an adjunct professor of International Education at New York University. Prior to joining HPI, she was the founding director of the German Center for Research and Innovation (GCRI).
