Ice Breaker
  • 5x Why: Simple icebreaker and active listening exercise that provides an opportunity for participants to meet someone new

  • Empathy exercise also provides a valuable data point for Aminka - insight into why someone chose to attend

  • Lead Coach facilitates large group reflection: Why do you think we did this exercise? Was there anything you found surprising?

Design Thinking Overview
  • Lead Coach explains creative problem solving approach called Design Thinking, a team-based method to generate human-centered innovation

  • We'll be using this process to address the following Design Challenge: How might we reduce traffic-related pollution in cities?

  • Transition everyone into the "Understand" stage

Understand Phase
  • Coaches explain what happens during this stage ("how to")

  • Coaches review "articles" about air pollution in cities - to help participants understand the challenge's context and history

  • Coaches work with participants to "deconstruct" the design question

  • Identify gaps in knowledge and potential interview questions that you can bring into Observe Phase

  • Note: Before transitioning into the next stage, coaches make sure participants have given "dots" to someone in their group

Observe Phase
  • Lead Coach transitions everyone into this stage
  • Two coaches model how to conduct an interview in front of entire group

  • Coaches explain the "how to" behind interviewing

  • Group creates a few interview questions

  • Coaches work with participants to determine roles (interviewer, note-taker)

  • Go into the field to interview people (stay on 48th floor)
  • Note: Before transitioning into the next stage, coaches make sure participants have given "dots" to someone in their group
